VMworld 2018: vSphere 6.7 Update 1 and more announcements

This post has already been read 13822 times!

It’s extremely hard to get innovative in the infrastructure space these days. Hypervisor updates, vCenter updates with hot new features . Who does really care? OK. get me the vCenter C Client back and I will be a happy man. I get more excited about blockchain tech nowadays than a new vSphere release. And I don’t think I’m the only one. I did read last week that Microsoft returns to VMworld. Wich is awesome! VMware and Microsoft are each going their own direction and are no longer really competing. This also confirms it’s no longer about the hypervisor anymore.

Microsoft is competing with Amazon and Google on the Public Cloud, where VMware is running their own offering on AWS (interesting move from AWS to get a lot of non-public cloud customers onboard). VMware itself has no intention to become a public cloud provider.

So first day are at VMworld. The keynote is about to start. It’s time to talk about “What’s New”,

vSphere 6.7 Update 1 (expected end Q3’18)

I do love the first bullet. finally the fully featured HTML5 webclient is available!

  • vMotion for NVIDIA GRID vGPU VMs. Support for Intel FPGA
  • vCenter Server Converge Tool to move from external PSC to internal PCS
  • Enhancements for vSAN (HCI Updates)
  • Enhanced Content Library

U1 VSAN Enhancements

VMware made some powerfull enhancements on Virtual SAN which are going to be bundled with Update 1.

  • Improved Health hecks and Recommendations.

vSphere Security

VMware today released vSphere Platinum, worlds most secure compute platform for all workloads. to describe this simple:

vSphere Platinum = vSphere 6.7 U1 Ent+ + VMware AppDefence.

AppDefense Plugin for vCenter Client is only with Platinum. VMware AppDefense is a data center endpoint security product that protects applications running in virtualized environments. Rather than chasing after threats, AppDefense understands an application’s intended state and behavior, then monitors for changes to that intended state that indicate a threat. When a threat is detected, AppDefense automatically responds.

vMotion for NVIDIA vGPU & Support for Intel FPGA

With vSphere 6.7 Update 1, VMware and NVIDIA have collaborated to significantly enhance the operational flexibility and utilization of virtual infrastructure accelerated with NVIDIA virtual GPU (vGPU) solutions which include the Quadro virtual Data Center Workstation, GRID vPC and GRID vApps.

Tech Preview: Project Dimension

Project dimension is a when a VMware customers has a cloud first initiative that then stretches into on prem infrastructure.  So what customers can do now is leveraging VMware on AWS and give your developers a AWS availability zone that is running on your own local hardware.

A VMware technology preview that will extend VMware Cloud to the data center, branch offices and the edge. Project Dimension will combine VMware Cloud Foundation, in a hyperconverged form factor, with VMware Cloud managed service to deliver an SDDC infrastructure as an end-to-end service, operated by VMware. Project Dimension will dramatically simplify operational complexity and cost and offers built-in security and isolation, allowing customers to focus on innovating and differentiating their businesses.
